hvaroom maja jelusic artwork paintings
Recognizible and iconic, the paintings mostly depict the architecture of the city of Hvar with an
emphasis on the city Cathedral of Saint Stephen, the motif of which is repeated throughout more than ten chatedral cycles.

The Hvar Cathedral has been the focal point of the entire Maja’s painting venture, now ongoing for more than two decades. Consciously or subconsciously, by fixing her attention to the spiritual architecture, she has become a patron figure of the Hvar Cathedral, which she has been portraying ever since her artistic beginnings, whereas her Cathedrals have found their place in collections all over the world.

It is no coincidence that her material inspiration is rooted in the island of Hvar, because alongside the Cathedral cycle,

Maja’s artistic work is permeated by other elements of Hvar landscape and Mediterranean imaginary. These are representations of the emblematic Dalmatian pine and agave tree exhibited on textiles resembling the flag of a fictional (artistic) kingdom.

These motifs, as well as those of Cathedral in particular, have become distinctive features of her artistic narrative.
